Les radiateurs en fonte distribuent leur chaleur par rayonnement, convection et conduction. De 10 % à 30 % de la chaleur sera diffusée par rayonnement, c'est-à-dire par le flux de chaleur émis par le métal chaud. La majeure partie de la chaleur est diffusée par convection; l'air réchauffé au contact du métal chaud s'élève et est remplacé par de l'air plus frais. Comme cet élément de transfert de chaleur se distingue par sa capacité de rayonnement de la chaleur, on l'appelle radiateur.
